The "terrifying scenario"... What do you do if a nuclear explosion occurs?

The outbreak of fire in a facility attached to the Zaporizhia

nuclear plant in Ukraine as a result of the hostilities raised fears of a nuclear catastrophe similar to the one that occurred in the Chernobyl reactor in 1986, and Russia's announcement of raising the state of nuclear alert made the world hold its breath from the development of the conflict between Moscow and the West to nuclear war.

The release of radioactive materials affects human health, increases the risk of cancer and may change the DNA and leave defects in future generations.

And nuclear energy experts are advised to quickly evacuate the area that was exposed to radiation before any other procedure, and then residents of the area are advised not to return home in case of exposure to nuclear radiation and to resort to public places.

And they should not stay inside cars, as they are not safe from radioactive materials. And if you have to take cover, it is recommended to close the windows and the ventilation system.

In most cases, iodine tablets are distributed to the population living near nuclear sites, provided that these tablets are kept in the same places as other medicines, in a safe and warm place (15 ° C to 30 ° C).

Time, distance and place of protection

One of the best ways to protect against radiation is to deal with a disaster in a "time, distance, and place of protection" manner. During a radiological emergency (a significant release of radioactive material into the atmosphere), these principles can be used to help prevent radiation.

Time: Reducing the time of exposure to radiation reduces the radiation dose received by the body.

Distance: The further away you are from the fire caused by a nuclear explosion or the affected area, the more the radiation dose decreases with increasing distance from the source.

Place of protection: Concrete and bulkheads made of lead or even water provide protection from gamma rays, which are formed in the form of energy packets.

In a radiation emergency, it is recommended to take cover in the middle of buildings away from windows and in basements or basements.

It is also advised to follow the general instructions provided by the authorities via television, radio or the Internet, as the competent authorities direct residents to the nearest safe places and what they can do to protect themselves.
